OBJECTIVES:

Knowing about world cultures and understanding global issues isn't enough.

The goal of the Now What? Tools for Mobilization conference is to
provide participants with the tools necessary to turn knowledge into action.

There will be two streams in this conference: the Activism stream and the Lifestyle stream.

The Activism stream is for those who already consider themselves activists, but would like to expand their knowledge and learn skills in order to get their message out there and engage others in a local or international cause.

The Lifestyle stream is for participants who may not consider themselves activists, but would simply like to dissect some of the important but overwhelming global issues of our time. They will engage in lively, balanced discussion with the presenters, who will provide them with tips on how to make practical changes in their lives that could improve the world.

Session #2 :

STREAM ONE:
Reaching the Media (Presented by: The Fulcrum)

You’ve solidified your cause. You’ve drafted a plan of action. You’re ready to raise support, but how do you spread the word?

Like it or not, the media maintains most of the power when it comes to influencing what today’s hot topics will be so it’s your job to make sure they sit up and pay attention to you. This workshop will explore different methods of reaching both mainstream and smaller community media, including writing strong letters to the editor, composing effective press releases, and creating noteworthy buzz.

STREAM TWO:
Food Security: What does this have to do with me? (TBD)

2:00 – 3:00

Session #3 :

STREAM ONE:
Sell Yourself! Youth and Social Marketing (Presented by TakingITGlobal)

This workshop will discuss the different methods of advocacy (traditional vs. modern), some of the qualities required for effective advocacy, and the characteristics of successful leadership.  The benefits of ICTs and how they can be used in advocacy campaigns and in creating meaningful social networks will also be explored. Throughout the course of the workshop, participants will be encouraged to share their views and experiences to facilitate a collaborative exchange.  Participants will gain a holistic understanding of the different methods of advocacy, knowledge of effective networking qualities, the use of ICTs as networking tools, and a renewed sense of global citizenship.

STREAM TWO: Session #3:
Debt, Aid and Trade: It’s called Fair Trade for a reason (Presented by: Transfair)

To what extent do our shopping decisions shape the lives of people thousands of miles away? How can we use our power as consumers to effect positive change in the world around us, and should we bother?

In this interactive session, participants will gain a solid understanding of what Fair Trade is and what it isn't. As well, they will come away with a strong grasp of how Fair Trade Certification works and how it can be used to separate real claims of fairness from marketing hype.

Controversies in Fair Trade will also be explored, including claims that Fair Trade goes too far or doesn't go far enough. Here there will be no easy answers, but participants will find themselves more informed and better equipped to make up their own minds about Fair Trade.

3:00-4:30 In the Service of Others event

WORKSHOPS:

Grassroots workshop:
Presented by SFUO- The Student Federation of the University of Ottawa

No matter what the issue, to achieve change, there needs to be a shift from individuals and ideas to movements and actions. How can this be achieved?
There is no one formula for activists to follow, but there are many tools we can use to get our message out, to increase interests and build coalitions. This workshop will aim to share those tools with activists in order to make progressive change from the bottom up.
