600 000 women die each year from pregnancy related complications, worldwide.}(Bolded) Most of these complications are treatable, when women have the proper health services and support that they require. But they don´t. In developing countries, only around 60% of women are attended by a skilled health worker. Women in Sweden have a 1 in 17 600 chance of dying of pregnancy complications, while for women from Niger the chance is 1 in 7. Maternal health is an area of development where we know and understand what is required, we have the expertise, it is just a matter of implementing what we know.
This event will be framed in the context of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), specifically the fifth goal of improving maternal health.
The event will begin with brief presentations by four individuals working with civil society in the area of maternal and international health and will continue with an open and frank discussion of issues in the area of maternal health. Participants will walk away with a broad understanding of issues surrounding maternal health and an inspired drive to support efforts to achieve the fifth MDG and to ensure that women all over the world have the support and services that they require.
Individuals of all backgrounds and interests are encouraged to attend!
