Event Description

Children and Armed Conflict

Presented by: UNICEF

  • Time: 7:30pm - 9:00pm
  • Date: Friday, January 29, 2010
  • Location: DMS 1160
  • Event Type:

Around the world, the rights of millions of children are violated because they live in the midst of crises, whether man made or natural. At any given time over 300,000 child soldiers, some as young as eight, are exploited in armed conflicts in over 30 countries around the world and more than 2 million children are estimated to have died as a direct result of armed conflicts since 1990. The chaos and insecurity of war and natural disaster threaten or destroys access to food, shelter, social support and health care, and results in increased vulnerability in communities, especially for children. From Afghanistan to Haiti, UNICEF focuses on children and their families ? on the essential interventions required for protection, to save lives and to ensure the rights of all children, everywhere.
