INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEEK at the UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA 2009
International Development Week (IDW) is a national event, promoted by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), which occurs every year during the first week of February. Many Canadian universities hold an International Development Week on campus in the spirit of engaging the university community in a national movement that encourages global citizenship and an active role in international development.
Since both of these concepts - global citizenship and Canadian image - fall directly under the University of Ottawa's Vision 2010 which affirms the commitment of U of O "to be, among universities, the essential reference on what Canada represents: a university that is an integral part of its community [and] open to the world", the university community is committed to continuing the yearly tradition of a week devoted to international development.
The spirit of the week is participatory and inclusive - students, members of the faculty, those involved in academic programming, the administration - all are encouraged to participate, collaborate, become a volunteer, or plan an event. The programming of the week will therefore include distinguished keynote speakers, several panel discussions, workshops, and activities open to all members of the university community (on both campuses). For those who become involved, International Development Week offers a chance to situate oneself into the academic discourse, debate and dialogue revolving around critical international issues which will in turn lead to a better understanding of the global framework in which we exist. Furthermore, this kind of empowerment through knowledge and understanding inspires informed and meaningful local and international activism and ultimately, change.
International Development Week will take place from Monday, February 2 to Saturday, February 7, 2009. The IDW Executive is proud to present this year's theme:
Development: a basic Human Right?
The week is divided into five sub-themes, as follows:
The right to...
- Food (Monday)
- Water/Sanitation (Tuesday)
- Education (Wednesday)
- Health (Thursday)
- Security (Friday)
Throughout the week, participants will have a chance to gain wisdom from our distinguished keynote speaker, Lloyd Axworthy, as he expounds on Canada's role in international human rights issues, learn from Maude Barlowe as she speaks on global access to water, and engage in conversation with Alexandre Trudeau as he details his journalistic experiences relating to security issues around the globe (In French only; bilingual Q & A afterward). The students will also learn from panel discussions, workshops, educational fairs, and a number of other activities designed to engage them in international development and human rights.
A final day, Saturday, February 7th, has been designated as a conference for students, entitled: "Now What? Tools for Mobilization", in which students will discover practical ways to channel the information they have gained earlier in the week into real and positive action in their local and global communities.
In this way, we intend to lead a dynamic and well-rounded week that will be based on mutual learning coupled with practical action.
